Oh good grief, this is a ridiculous response. LDS do no believe we "earn or way to heaven". We believe we are saved by grace after all we can do. In other words, it is the direction of the path we are choosing here in this life that is important, not how many marks for good works we have achieved. Paying tithe is mandatory as part of the preparation to enter the house of God. Tithe is not a financial thing, it is a faith thing. There are countless stories of people with nothing who chose to tithe with the last pennies they had only to be blessed with the means to make ends meet. It's stepping off into the dark and having the faith to know God will catch you. That is why it is a preparatory step to entering into the presence of the Lord.
And the snide comment about temple recommends is simply balderdash. Mormons do not believe only those holding a recommend in this life will enter heaven, our doctrine makes that very clear.
This is a good example as to why this kind of forum does nothing but propagate lies and prejudice. This outrageous comment was allowed to stand for 5 years. How sad.
