  • An explanation? Yes. Timekeeping was much nore difficult to do back then. Most scholars agree that Methuselah's "969 years" probably refers to 969 months - which is still over 80 years, extremely long for that time in history. It is best to use the bible as a source of allegory and instructive stories, and not scientific fact.
  • Yes. God decides how long you'll live and that's what happens. It was the same back then.
  • you have been negged for a good question I will plus you to help even things up, + :o)
  • the passage in Genesis is a prophecy of the flood, which occurred 120 years later, which is why people lived longer than 120 years after the flood. The passage in Psalms is contemporary to the time it was written. The closer to creation, to smaller the effect of sin was on the body, and the longer man was able to live. Now, we are steeped in sin, and it's effects have warped our bodies so that our life span is much shorter than it was at the beginning.
  • The years spoken of in Genesis are literal years. Remember, back in Genesis 1, when God created man, and then woman, it was with the intent of living forever...until sin was introduced. With sin, comes disinigration...of everything! The earth, the nutrients in the earth, sickness and disease...everything is now in a downward spiral. You wil notice, as time goes by, the years of man's existance here on earth are shortening little by little. Until after the flood, where they begin to "normalize" to what we expect today. There will come a time, after the Believers are Raptured off of the earth, and the 7 year Tribulation is over, that Christ will return to the earth, rule as King over it for 1000 years, and during that time, the ages will begin to increase once again. After His 1000 year reign, there will be a "judgment", and all will receive bodies that will live eternally....eternally in Heaven or Hell.
  • It's a fairy tale.
  • The 120 year statement that God gave was "law" in a sense. Methuselah lived for 969 years and then that law made. When reading the Psalms you have to understand the genre. Its poetry. Its not "law" or "command" in a sense. What the author (Moses in this case) is saying is, if a man has his strength he will live to 70 and if he's luck he'll make it to 80. His whole point or premise in this psalm is that we are nothing but a puff of wind or dust before and eternal God that always has been and always will be YET He chooses to love us.
  • the 120 yrs. is the time NOAH had to build the Ark and WARN the people.. have not found the verse yet, but there is a passage where God did shorten the Longevity of man...Because of so much evil of man at Noah's time. But not until after HIS people were passed away... But for more references on Factors that shorten our lives and conditions for a longer:1P 3:11;Ex.20:12; 1K.3:14;1P.3:10; shorter:Ps.55:23;Je.17:11; 2Sam.3:27;Ma.27:5;Job22:15 & 16.
  • Looking at the Bible, I noticed that Genesis 6:3 refers to man with Gods Holy Spirit in them; a condition of being born again according to the new testament and the good news. Where as Psalms 90 talks of sin and days ebbing away and lives of toil and trouble; which if you are born again is the complete opposite of Gods, love, peace and joy in your life in fact it is a position of not being born again or having God's Holy Spirit in your life. Also I would like to point out as no-one else has yet on the internet that Jewish years are based on the moon cycles not the sun cycles as modern years are. Now 120 years is a literal translation however in modern sun cycle years that would be 140 years. So a man blessed of God with God's Holy Spirit within him should live no less than 140 years and a strong willed person doing it alone will not live longer than 93.5 years and will die in his or her sins not knowing God's joy, love or peace. If you don't know God's Holy Spirit as a real entity within your life I would urge you to seek it out, because life is so much more pleasant with joy and peace and Love in your life and comfort from God through his spirit than loneliness, pain, hurt and worry. I don't want to ever go back to the way life used to be. My hope is that the readers of this find God's Holy Spirit whilst they are still in their flesh. Good luck...
  • The 120 years on Genesis 6 mean that from the moment God said that to the moment he took action to wipe off the mankind from the world(except Noah and his family - the beginning of the flood, there were 120 years. It didn't mean that man was going to live up to 120 years. There were people after God said that who lived more then 120 years, like Abraham 175 years, Isac 180 years. The verse says: his days will be a hundred and twenty years. So his days will be. If God was talking about man's life in general then "will be" would mean all men would live 120 years. As for the psalm 90, sin affected life for worse, life became shorter and shorter because of sin's affect. So the psalmist is talking about life in his life time.
  • =) yes.. watch daniels timeline!! i always got confused whenever i read that verse.. but guess what?? you know how god warned everyone about the second comming of christ? and he said that when you seek you will find. well people searched and they found crazy hidden answers in the bible example.. the 120 years. When God said this.. he ment 120 JUBILENT years... and not of men.. but of the human race.. or the world lol. Anyways 1 JUBELENT year= 50 years 120x50=6000.. yupp The last three Jubilees were: 1867 (The final emancipation of the Jews in Austria and Hungry), 1917 (The 400 yr Ottoman rule ended - Balfour Declaration), and 1967 (The Six Day War - Jerusalem was re-united); It's pretty easy to figure out the next Jubilee year (1967 + 50yrs = 2017). We are at this threshold today, approaching the 120 th Jubilee year (6000 yrs), the time of the restitution of all things. and guess what?? we are almost there!! =D or =( for some people.. well thats just the basic explanation =) but i really recomand you to type in "daniels timeline report" and you will be amazed on how God organized everything so perfectly!! =) byeeee =) and oh yeah read "heaven is so real" about a woman who went to heaven 17 times.. with Jesus. she was a very obedeint christian which is why God gave her such oppurtunity. ITS AMAZING, best book after bible. NOOO JOKE! =) and btw just 3 month ago she announced on her site that the travulation has begun. so daniels timeline is true =) god bless =D
  • Genesis 6 says man will live 120 years, but that's not a reference to age, that's how much time man has before the flood occurs. That's a common misunderstanding. :) God isn't saying, "I'm gonna keep people from living more than 120 years" He's saying "I'm giving them 120 more years before I destroy the earth. There is no need for allegory, the Bible makes sense. After the flood, men seemed to live significantly shorter lives. There are plenty of theories about why this is so, but the Bible doesn't tell us why. David, who obviously lived after the flood, was simply stating in Psalm 90 that the maximum amount of life a man has, (70 years, or if he's strong, 80) is a breath compared to God's eternal nature. A lot of people like to use allegory to explain different texts, but the truth is, there isn't any allegory in the Bible. The Bible needs to be studied diligently to be understood properly, and even though we may not understand it all the time, the answer is not to allegorize it to make sense, the answer is to admit there is a conclusion that I haven't understood yet. I hope this helps :)
  • simply the work of christ. much like bodies of saints who don't go corrupt. no scientific explanation, but for some reason it only happens to saints. gotta have something to do with holiness.
