Help answer this question below.
This answer is submitted by john pennington. Are you referring to taxes assessed, by each state, for all residents of that state? if so, here's the answer. the constitution of the united states allows each state to be sovereign. meaning, each state is independent of the federal government, concerning laws, taxes, and law enforcement. there is the federal government, the state government and the local government.
To give you an example: consider a gallon of gasoline. from the refinery, it cost 50 cents a gallon to produce or make. the federal government adds 10 cents tax to this gallon, the state government adds 08 cents a gallon and local government adds another 10 cents per gallon. 50+10+08+10=78 cents. then you would pay 78 cents a gallon. at the pump, for gasoline.
The federal, state and local government all operate approximately the same, when it comes to taxation.
You pay state taxes on food, gasoline, clothing, automobiles, just about everything you purchase. these state taxes are collected and distributed by each states's comptroller. the state tax money collected, helps each state to pay teachers salaries, operate the highway patrol, build and repair new state roads and highways, and generally runs each state government independently of the federal or local government.
Money that you have to give to the state government just like the deceral taxes you give to the federal government.
