In Jack the Ripper, how can I pick up the blue pencil in the newspaper office to mark the calendar?

After much frustration I figured this out. Save the current game and quit out of it. Restart your computer and load the saved game (must be a saved game, not "resume game"). This should allow one to pick up the blue pencil. It may take a few tries before it works, but it eventually does.
