In the Western World, is embalming always carried out before burial or cremation?

    No, not always. Generally, embalming is not required by law, but it is usually a practical necessity when there is to be public viewing or when the body is to be shipped by common carrier. Also,when refrigeration is not available, embalming may be the only means of preserving the body until disposition.

    No. It is not generally required for either. Health regulations may specify slightly different handling for a body which is not embalmed, though.

    No, it is a waste of time and money. The only reason to embalm is if the body has to leave the country to be buried or cremated, then the law steps in and the body is embalmed before they leave the country.
