If a lot of your songs are long then that could be the reason. If one song lasts as long as two average songs then it takes the same amount of space as two songs.

This might seem like a silly question, but did you buy it new? If you bought it off of someone else (i.e. Craigslist, eBay, et al.) it might have other files taking up your space - even files that aren't songs. Have you "explored" the drive on a computer to see what else is/might be on there?

1. How long are your songs? It can hold 8,000 minutes of songs. 2. Do you have any pictures? They also take up space.

Generally, the companies that claim their products hold XXX number of songs base that on the smallest file sizes possible. Check and see how your songs are recorded and at what bit rate. I record at 128 kbps (kilobits per second) in an mp3 format. If you record at a higher bit rate or in another format (such as wav or wma) then you are using more space to store your songs. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since these formats offer better sound quality, but they do take up more space. You will need to find a balance point where you keep the sound quality you want and in a small enough package to fit where you need it.

If it is an iPod and it is 1 GB, then it can hold 200 (or 250) songs. The important thing is the bit rate at which each song was downloaded. If you get a very high quality download (at 320) it can take up much more space than a standard download. Normally, a song should take about 4 MB - hence 1GB should give 250 songs. (My bet is that it is not 1 GB; it is 256 MB and you have been mislead.)
