If siginifcant mass from the moon crashed into the Earth, it could well destroy all multi-cellular life on the planet. Barring that, the absence of the moon would result in no tides, ruining many coastal ecosystems. Furthermore, species that coordinate their activites with the rise of a full moon would suffer greatly. We'd survive, but many species would die.
We'd be showered with moon rocks. Any boats waiting for the high tide to go out again would be waiting for a very very long time. Several species that live in the tidal zone and are adapted to it might die out or have to evolve quickly.
We're going to find out very soon.....
Without the moon, we would also be more likely to take a hit from a near Earth object. The moon acts as a shield, that throughout history has deflected and taken the hit from objects meant for Earth. The moon also offers the Earth stability. It keeps the oceans in check with tides. Without the moon we could end up with a runaway greenhouse effect, like the planet Venus. Plus, all of the wolves would go crazy because they wouldn't have anything to howl out.

Wouldn't we all be floating?
by Exsterminator on August 29th, 2005
There WOULD be tides from the sun for example, but these tides would be much weaker. And I did not know of any life that coordinate their time based on lunar phases, besides humans perhaps.
Exsterminator, I don't understand why we'd float.
