IT always has been.
I was in Iowa in 1996 and MO in 2006.
People were STILL being paid $0.10-$0.25 above the minimum wage at those times (Depending on work/company)
People with kids were getting by with both husband and wife working, paying rent and feeding a family of 4 or more. But damn, one freaking burp in the paycheck and they debated moving or not eating (The kids always got fed though)
Greed? Some of that was true, but those companies were few and far between. nearer to a city, they got better, but out in some sections, they worked for pennies..Really a bummer.
Because the gov. encourages job to leave the US. my home town in Il. has lost at least 3 factories and the 3 that are left are talking of leaving.
Having been born/reared in Iowa, it's my guess that the reason is because that section of the country is mostly farms, and not industrial.
It's referred to as "America's bread basket."
Farming areas have never been all that profitable, unfortunately.
