  • They don't really eat at all. They grown on top of the surface of the yolk. The yolk sac supplies food material to the embryo for the first 17 days. Then on the 18th-21 days (for a chicken) the chick draws what remains of the yolk into its body and "takes its lunch with it" (so-to-speak) when it hatches. Thus, the chick really doesn't need to be fed for the few days after it hatches.
