Long toss is an excellent way to build up muscle and get better velocity on pitches. I wouldn't tend to use long toss to loosen up muscles but is something is gradually worked into. i.e. start throwing short and gradually move apart until your throwing "long toss"
Long toss is used primarily to strengthen the muscles associated with the throwing motion as well as to loosen those muscles up.
