I have bipolar, too. And I've thought about the same thing. This shouldn't stop you from having children. Even if they do get the disorder, too (which I'll admit is possible), it can be treated, just as it can be for you.

I am a Bipolar mom with 2 kids. I was diagnosed when they were 3 and 9 They have not yet determined if Bipolar disorder is hereditary. As a mom, you can expect a time in your life even if it isnt till old age that our kids will take care of us. Mine were a blessing to me through my episodes. I was hospitalized twice. The second time my husband had an affair and eventually ended our marriage. I have primary gaurdianship. There are many circumstances to consider, including how supportive your family is. There is more to treating your Biploar disorder than just taking your meds. Your lifestyle, eating habits and excersise ALL lead to healtier living. THOSE are what kids need to learn and you have it. BUT... Speak to your Doc. Children cause stress worry and anxiety even depression My kids are now 8.5 and 14.5 and I have been in phase 3 maintinence for 2 yrs. Did you know kids with ADD are now being linked to Bipolar adults? The answer is all in the parenting. Can you cope? If you dont think so, try Foster parenting for a while as a sort of trial run.
