  • Hey, i know heaps of youngs. sounds english...!
  • I think it's Korean.
  • I do not know where it comes from but I do know that all with that surname will die Young!
  • The name "Young" is an Asian African name . It firstly originated from the Tribe {Bing Bing Sumatsu Gungo}Gungo , which in the Sumatsuan congist translates to Young sha, As we know it now as plain ole' Young!!!!!!
  • I have the last name Young. I am a professor in New York and many of my students are surprized to see me on the first day of class. They expect an Asian professor and not someone who is blonde and blue eyed. Students have asked me, is your wife Asian, assuming I took my wife's surname. But the truth is my family had French roots as many people did in the part of Canada where I grew up. The story history goes that to assimilate into the dominant English Canadian culture the family translated the name from Dejeune or Lejeune which roughly tranlated means "from/of young" or "the young." Before we studied the family tree I always wondered how there were Youngs who were English protestant that we were not related to and why they weren't Catholic like our branch of the family. I have also come across many African-Americans with the name Young which makes the answer about the African tribe Gunjo interesting to read. Living in NY I also come across Jewish folks with the name. My Jewish friend explained to me that it may have been shortened from Youngman (think comedian Henny Youngman) to avoid anti-semitism in earlier days as young sounds more Anglo Saxon. She says her husband's family did a similar shortening when they immigrated generations ago.
  • Young is an English/Scottish last name. If a black has the last name it probably because it was the last name giving to his ancestor by a slave owner. Most Koreans with the last name will have it spelling differently. http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/young-family-crest.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_%28surname%29
