Also called problem gambling, a gambling addiction, compulsive gambling, and pathological gambling, problem gambling is characterized by an urge to gamble, even in the face of consequences sufficiently Although seemingly analogous to other addictions, in its early stages at least problem gambling is construed not by the gambler's behavior but by its consequences. As a result, it is relegated diagnostically to something more than a personality quirk but less than a compulsion. In fact, a gambler must virtually throw away his entire life to gambling before the American Psychiatric Association's criteria will acknowledge the presence of a problem. At that point it becomes clinical pathological gambling, a progressive mental illness involving an impulse control disorder. http://www.myaddiction.com/gambling.html

I am a CG - in recovery and have been in recovery for a little over a year now The reasons as to why someone gambles are varied. Some people turn to compulsive gambling to escape reality - they cant face the stresses and strains of day to day life Some would say its to punish themselves - they are destroying themselves and think they deserve it Some say its because they know they are destroying themselves and at least KNOW they are doing it and doint want to deal with not knowing what is round the corner Some do it because they want all the good things in life quickly (or at least thats what they think) You see a compulsive gambler will always lose no matter WHAT they win it will never be enough As a compsulsive gambler I can say that even if i won millions of pounds - I would have kept on gambling to turn it into more The addiction to gambling is just as powerful as that to drugs or alcohol it just manifests itself differently
