  • The "acid(+) + base(-) -> salt + water" is the the arrhenius definition of acid-base reactions. In reality acid base reactions tend to be more complicated. IN an acid base reaction, protons (H) or hydroxide (OH) ions are exchanged. A very common "acid/base" reaction is HCl (acid) + NaOH (base) -> water and NaCl(salt) But even if the NaOH is not there, an acid base reaction does take place when HCl is added to water. The products are cloride ions and hydronium(H30). This is just one example.
