Though not clearly stated in the Bible, Nimrod has since ancient times traditionally been interpreted to be the one who led the people to build the Tower of Babel. Since his kingdom included the towns in Shinar, it is believed likely that it was under his direction that the building began. This is the view adopted in the Targums and later texts such as the writings of Josephus. Some extrabiblical sources, however, assert to the contrary, that he left the district before the building of the tower.

Babylon or Gate of God is an ancient city close to Baghdad Iraq. The builders of the tower were in open defiance of God's commands. Nimrod built many cities including Babylon and though he was the founder he did not build them or the Tower of Babel alone. After its destruction Nebuchadnezzar ll rebuilt it. It’s called a tower but archaeology studies show that it was a great temple.

Bible says: “He made the start in becoming a mighty one in the earth. He displayed himself a mighty hunter in opposition to God. . . . The beginning of his kingdom came to be Babel (this was where the tower of Babel was started)and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. Out of that land he went forth into Assyria and set himself to building Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah.”—Genesis 10:8-11.

Since Nimrod “made the start in becoming a mighty one in the earth,” he obviously started something new. But what? The words “the beginning of his kingdom” give us a clue. If Nimrod had a kingdom, then he must have been a king, a ruler. So the German Bible commentary by Dr. August Knobel correctly calls him “the first post-Flood ruler,” explaining that no one like him had existed before. Accordingly, The Bible in Living English renders Genesis 10:8: “He was the first to become a potentate on earth.”
