some people think so. I always thought I'd be for it if one of my family members was murdered. But when my cousin was brutally murdered, I decided I'd rather the scum to rot in jail and get used by big hairy smelly men as a play toy.

It depends on your perspective. To be truly just, we must expunge emotion completely and analyse each case analytically.

If we are to say that a human life is not worth living, and that we have the right to take it away then we really haven't evolved as much as we would like to think. We are making the same decision as the criminal.

I would never agree with capital punishment - and it isn't just either. Firstly, if the person on trial pleads innocent, there is no way of knowing 100% that they're guilty. Secondly it's racist, a black criminal is more likely to be killed than a white criminal. Thirdly, it's just wrong! If the state justfies killing its own people, then that's like saying it's alright for anyone to kill anyone else if they think they have a good reason. In prison people have the chance to change, and you have to hold onto the belief that they will. The best way to judge a society is not on the way it treats its citizens, but on the way it treats its criminals.

It is not just at all,and this practice has long since any purpose ,if it ever did in the first place. How is it any different than in the old movies where beheading, been drawn and quartered, having your insides cut out,and other things. It is an inhuman practice.

In America it's part of the Christian Tradition. It falls under their "Family Values" and the "Sanctity of Human Life."

your society, your values, your laws. So you can say it is just for you who live in those societies until and if you change your laws. I don't live in one of those thank God. ... could you push that button?

In different countries the laws are different. I think that for most murders its just as its a life for a life but there will allways be excemptions. It certainly shouldnt be taken lightly but as a Brit I approve of the way America handles it but not of the way some countries use it too much.

Most of the answers you have here are very good. One of the points that hasn't been talked about is that, it is more cost effective to have a person spend 40 years in prison. The cost of have putting a person to death is about the same as have a person spend 40 years in prison(spending a life sentence) but distributing the amount of money over 40 years,if they live that long, is much easier for a state to manage. I've had this conversation many times and have written many papers on this, it basically comes down to what is considered right and wrong for a individual. If someone considers capital punishment inhumane then life imprisonment would be the best option, but to other people life in prison is even more inhumane then the death penalty. the only way to resolve this conflict is finding a better way to punish severe crime. This solution isn't going to come along for a while, and even when it does people will still consider this new means of justice inhumane.

Do you think a senseless murder is just?
