  • People actually pretty much always use the phrase inaccurately. It should specifically refer to vomiting. The phrase was first seen in 1705, although it may have been in use before then. Since it has its origins in Britain, it helps to understand that the English use the term "sick" more narrowly than those of us in the US. A Brit is more likely to speak of being "ill" where would would use a general "sick." To the British "sick" refers to vomit or vomiting. Ever seen a dog vomit after it's eaten something disgusting (a favorite passtime it seems)? Now do you get it? :D
