I can't remember where I heard this, but in the Middle East, to burp after a meal is considered polite.

I have heard that this used to be true in the US a long, long time ago. Supposedly it meant the food was good, and was eaten with enthusiasm. If the food wasn't good, people tend to eat slower so they wouldn't swallow extra air and wouldn't burp.
