Something stale. From stale perfume to stale cigarettes. That doesn't mean that they smell bad, just, well, old.
-
That would depend on the individual person. An older lady who loves perfumes and powders might smell slightly floral. An older man with severe arthritis might smell like a topical medication. It really all depends. I know a lot of elderly folks and most of them smell like PEOPLE.

I have a friend that is 90 and another who is 95, and another who is 84. They don't smell any different than anyone else. I love to ask them questions. You can bet your arse you will get a direct no BS answer.
-
Hard to say. But something like dust and oatmeal.

I used to mentor at a hospitality hall....and there was this one woman that smelled like poop...because...well i don't need to explain...but the whole hall smelled mainly like urine...and that smell you get when you're sick and haven't showered for days...and all you have been doing is sleeping in the same clothes in your bed....

I used to deliver papers to an old people's retirement home. It invariably smelled of over-boiled cabbage. When I left college, I worked in another old people's home. It smelled like over-boiled cabbage. Weird.

Payton, I think you are generalizing your opinion of seniors and stigmatizing them. I find this question offensive to the elderly. My parents whom are old do not have a particular odor about them because they take pride in their personal hygiene including grooming themselves.

My Nana always smelled like the wonderful food she was always cooking. She spent most of her life in the kitchen and loved every minute of it. : )

The smell often associated with old people is caused by palmitoleic acid. It is the acid itself that causes the smell. Everyone's skin produces it, but it increases greatly with age. A person in their 70s produces 10 times more than a person in their 40s. Some people have it worse than others. Look up Palmitoleic Acid on wikipedia and also have a look at this article about the people who discovered this information and developed a cosmetic solution for getting rid of it here: http://web-japan.org/trends00/honbun/tj990921.html

In general, I have no idea. But I do love the way my gramma used to smell, like soap and perfume and unwashed hair. Sometimes, I can swear I smell her.. :)

Actually, they smell like everyone else: with their noses. Perhaps you mean 'what do old people stink like' or 'what aroma do old people have'.
-
they smell like a foggy toilet.

In my experience, most old people smell of either moth balls or Bengay. Seriously.

When I was doing my welfare work for an ex service organization I used to visit many OAP care homes and some of them due to their age were incontinent and there was always a strong aroma of pee. However, all the other old folks smelt OK because I used to take them a monthly supply of soaps, shampoo's and deodorants, and this included the incontinent ones.

I read somewhere recently (maybe Scientific American) that it is caused by a chemical (N_?) that older people produce...the article further went on to say that someone has developed an odour which counteracted that.
