Why did Zaire change its name to Congo? Now there are two Congos! It's confusing!

    DuncanPed

    That was the previous name until 1971 when Mobutu changed it to Zaire. It was changed back when he was forced out in 1997.

    Both are on the Congo River. One was a French Colony, the other was Belgian before they gained their independence.
