Ladies, has anyone used Aygestin and had any bad side effects? Primarily hormonal issues?

I have been bleeding non stop heavy since April of this year. November they had me take this med for 15 days. When I stopped it 2 days later I had a gusher of a period. With severe cramping, and very large clots. I swear it felt as if I were in labor. I would stand in the shower as the blood would pour from me. My dear husband has been a big help as to I cant seem to do anything. If I stand I pour blood, if I bend I gush. I have been on bed rest for about 6 days now. The pain has been intolerable, I have been taking 800mg of Motrin 5 times a day. If I miss the Motrin by 30 mins it literally feels like my Ovary may burst!! I have severe cramping, swelling, Hot Flashes, SEVERE Mood swings (to the point I almost slapped my mother!!) nausea, terrible acne, sleeplessness, severe clotting, and also had terrible abdomonal pain and break through bleeding while on my 15 day dose of meds. I am 26 years old, wearing 17 inch POISE Pads, changing them every 30 mins, and wearing a very unflattering DIAPER!! This has been a very terrible time for me...I think Im going to lose it!!

I have been on Aygestin for about 1 week now. I take 5 mg in am and 5mg in pm. I was put on it b/c of breakthrough bleeding for the past 7 years. It immediately stopped the bleeding but now I am experiencing some piercing cramps that come and go. After reading some of your posts, I am wondering if this is going to get worse???? I hope this stops my bleeding b/c I am tired of it. I have not noticed any other side effects but maybe that's b/c I haven't been on it long enough. Keep this message board going b/c this is helpful.

My goodness YES!! I've been crying for 3 days STRAIGHT! I also snap at anyone that looks at me! Even my mom wants to know what my problem is. I've been taking Aygestin since September,2008-yes my period has gone from bleeding as many as 32days to maybe 3days,but I almost can't even stand myself anymore! It was nice to read that I'm not the only person going thru this! I've had all of the same things happen to me as a bunch of other ladies. I'm starting to question myself-do I want a 20day period-or do I want to be myself again?

I was put on Aygestin after a month of bleeding.* It stopped my period right away - the doc wanted me to stay on a month (since I was anemic). Two weeks after taking it I got break-thru bleeding and the worst cramps I ever had in my life (like being in labor - had to take motrin and vicodin alternately around the clock for 5 days) then the doc said to 'double up' and the cramps stopped.

The bleeding continued but very, very light and almost stopped when the month was up. Two days later a gusher for 4 hours straight (had to go to ER cause I was already anemic by then and it tapered off when I got there but they gave me an IV and observed me just in case) and then when I got home, some light stuff for 2 days then it stopped.

(*Vaginal ultrasound found a mildly thickened endometrial lining, 14mm, but biopsy was negative.)

Three and 1/2 weeks later (with no sign of bleeding) I'm back on it (10 days a month) and noticed I got cramps again after about 7 days on it. Yesterday was my last day for this month and I'll have to see what kind of 'period' comes. I sure hope it's light like some of the others mentioned.

That's really the only side effect I got but hey some bad cramps for a few days is better than bleeding to death! You can hemorrhage so be careful ladies. If you have non-stop bleeding go to the doctors right away - don't wait!

If the Aygestin is not working for you, ask your doc to try the progesterone cream (biodentical, not synthetic) or something else in the progesterone family. I read that Dong Quai is good too but not sure about dosage - it's in the chinese herb family.

Also check for fibroids - they cause heavy bleeding and cramps.

I have been on Aygestin for almost a month she said it would stop my period I am having serious issues, I don't see any benifits from the drug. I was having period for about a month when she put me on it. She said it should get it under control (NOT) I have not had cramps for the last 7 years until now boy did I forget how painful they can be. Thank God I go back on Monday. Good luck with the drug I don't see where it helps anything.

this crap sux! my dr put me on it to stop irregular bleeding (3 days ago) and i feel worse now than i did before! i think imma toss it in the clinic floor next time i go and tell them to take it and see how they feel!!!! i am still bleeding the first night i took it was HORRIBLE thought i was gonna bleed to death the second night i got bad stomach cramps...tonight being the 3rd night the cramps are worse i am in a horrible mood my right shoulder is hurting so bad it hurts to laugh though i don't feel like it anyway....sometimes it feels like i can't get enough air yea i think imma tell them to shove this stuff....

Side effects caused by estrogen/progesterone combinations may include:
Appetite changes, backache, blood pressure increase, bull's-eye rash, changes in appetite, changes in sex drive, dizziness, fatigue, hair growth or loss, headache, inflammation of the urinary tract, itching, nervousness, skin bruising, symptoms similar to premenstrual syndrome, red or tender skin nodules

I am 46, my cycle was clock work, regular until June. I did not cycle at all in June, bled very light for 11 days in July and have been bleeding for 23 days at the time of this blog. The last 80 hours have been heavy, large clots, slight cramps. I am extremly tired, worn out. I started Aygestin today, 1 5mg for each hour not to exceed 6 hours. I was told I would immediatly see a difference, slowing, lighter flow. So far that has not happened. The dosage goes for 4 pills a day for 4 days, 3 pills a day for 4 days, 2 pills for 4 days, then lastly 1 pill a day for 8 days. I am very concerned about the break through bleeding and the hemmorage that could occur when the medication is done. What is the advantage of this med? I am told that it might straighten out my cycle? I am afraid this will lead to an ablation as an end result. All tests up to this are negative, just a hormonal imbalance. This is horrible.

I am 29 y/o female, After Bleeding non stop for 4 months straight my Doctor Did a D&C and Hysterscopy and put me on Aygestin 5mg twice a day for 14 days. When I stopped this medication midway thru the 14days because I was experiancing an increase in depression, i started to bleed again so i continued the aygestin. After the perscription ran out, 2 days later I experianced the worse symptoms ever. I began bleeding profusley. I had to change my pad once an hour(which made a mess all over my bed, and bathroom because the pads couldnt contain the blood which had clots in it as well) and the cramps were so bad Codeine didnt even touch it. After suffering for a night like this, I went to my Dr's office. The staff rushed me to the emergency room and i was given a sonogram and bloodwork was done. They Diagnosed me with Menorraghia and put me back on aygestin 5mg twice a day for 7 days. I have a follow up appointement with my Dr this week. I will keep everyone updated as I am terrified of whats going on with me.
