Why is it wrong/looked down upon for women to breastfeed a child above a certain age?

Because we are a bunch of prudes. We get this from our various religious groups that dominate Western thought. I know it's quite acceptable in other cultures and I personally don't have a problem with such a natural act of bonding.

Well breast milk is very fattening, and with the obesity epidemic going on kids don't really need more of that.

I guess it just seems that when a child is old enough to feed him/herself, they should.
