If I buy a DVD player with an HDMI connection and hook it to the HDMI connection on my HDTV, will I get an HD picture?

    In short: nope.

    You need an HD source in order to receive and display an HD output. Sure, the signal path will be HD all the way, and the DVD player may output a progressively-scanned picture, but it'll still only be your regular DVD-quality picture.

    Regular DVDs are only big enough to store SD (Standard Definition) content - the average bitrate for the main movie on a DVD is two or three megabits per second, whereas high-def content is at least (on average) ten megabits per second (or more). Also, HD content is at least a resolution of 720 pixels high (with a larger resolution of 1,080 pixels also available to content producers), but DVD content is only 480px (in the case of NTSC) or 576px (for PAL). So, I think the phrase you can't work miracles applies here, the video will probably be upscaled to fit your HD screen... But it won't be HD.

    Get a DVD player that upconverts to a simulated 720p or 1080i/p - until the price of high definition DVD players and discs comes down.
