  • One thing that you can try is to apply fresh lemon juice to the spot before you go to bed and wash it off in the morning. CAUTION: do not apply it to your whole face, it will sting and your skin will get all red. Just use a cotton ball to apply to the spot or scar. Lemon is a natural whitener so eventually it will lighten the spot. It may take a while, but It will lighten it a bit after a while. Other than that, I'd see a dermatologist.
  • I went to see my GP after I had bad acne that was starting to scar. We went through a large number of different antibiotics, the idea being that a large proportion of acne is due to bacterial colonisation of sebaceous ducts, with little luck. Eventually I was referred toa dermatologist, who prescribed me Roaccutane (generic name is Isotretinoin). This ia a very powerful anti-acne drug with excellent results, however it can have serious side effects (depression) in a very small minority of people, hence why it must be prescribed by a specialist. It is basically a modified preparation of Vitamin A taken for about 6 months at a time. Usually, if the treatment is successull, the acne will not reoccur again following end of treatment (it has't with me), and in cases that do, a second course usually takes care of it completely. However, although the link with depression is not proven, because of the concern over a small number of cases, it must be consultant prescribed, meaning you may have to wait for a few weeks to see a hospital based consultant before treatment can start. My course was immensely successful after a few weeks, and the acne has never come back since. However, whilst on the medication, I did suffer from dry skin on my face, as it reduces sebum production, so the skin dries out. My lips also often cracked. But I just bought some moisturiser and applied this, and carried vaseline with me for my lips, no problem. You may have to take a blood test beforehand as it can alter your fat metabolism, though this is much rarer, and if you are expecting a baby you cannot have this medication for a few weeks either side of trying to concieve, but if you aren't actively trying for a baby and are using contraception, or not currently in a sexual relationship, there isn't a problem. My advice - go ask your doctor. If they try you on antibiotics first, they may work. If not, Isotretinion is a hugely effective backup.
