Yes. A lot of magazines claim that models exfoliate their lips by rubbing them with a toothbrush to slough off dead skin. This is not very hygienic or effective. Try mixing a few drops of honey and a rough granule (salt or sugar). Apply to your lips in a circular motion to exfoliate. Rinse. Follow up with a little olive oil, vaseline, baby oil, whatever applied thinly over the lips. The exfoliation process also leaves lips with a nice pinch of natural color. If your lips are severely cracked or bleeding, go with sugar since salt will sting more. You might choose to apply a thin layer of an actibacterial ointment (the gel type that looks like vaseline and does not have a pain reliever in it) to help heal and protect the cracked skin.

Drink water, water and more water, eight glasses a day. Within a few days you'll notice an improvement, In the mean time use chapstick, balm, or vaseline. No lipstick!

If you're using a commercial lipbalm: stop! Many people are allergic to the ingredients in them, and thus they can make the problem worse- camphor, menthol and lanolin are the worst offenders, and are included in most balms from "beauty" ranges- some lipsticks also contain these ingredients. This alone can help restore your lips to normal within a few weeks. Using a little of your normal facial moisturiser on your lips, or a slick of pure petroleum jelly is the absolute maximum you need. Make sure that you keep your body hydrated in general by drinking plenty of water and cutting back alcohol, caffeine and salt. When its sunny make sure your sunscreen covers your lips, as sun can dry them out a lot. Some beauty books I've read suggest that lip dryness can also be caused by B vitamin deficiency- I'm not convinced how true this is, but it can't hurt to keep an eye on your diet and perhaps take a good multivitamin.

I wear lip gloss alot, and on the rare occasion I don't my lips will get very dry and chapped, and start to bleed. I used vaseline before, but one day I didn't have any so tried the A&D ointment that I had for my tattoo care. It is the BEST! It is mainly petrolium (sp?), like vasaline, but it also contains many vitamins and fish oil, which will help your lips heal. Here is the link to A&D ointment on Drugstore.com: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=13117&catid=26911&trx=PLST-0-SRCH&trxp1=26911&trxp2=13117&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SRCH

I have the same problem and using products that have camphor and lanolin, etc. just made it worse. I use plain white vaseline to moisturize. My dermatologist recommended exfoliating my lips and that helps a lot. I just use a moist cottonball to exfoliate and follow up with the vaseline. Drinking plenty of water helps too.
