Help answer this question below.

I have a 2002 chevy 1500 Z71, 5300 motor 3.73 gears, window sticker say I can only pull 6400lbs, book say 7800. Can anyone tell me why sticker would be so low, if thats the case, how much could you go above the 6400 comfortably?

    manufacturers downrate all capacities,for safety and legal reasons.you could possibly tow 7000lb. w/.your truck but it would have to have a frame mounted class 3 hitch,and auxillary braking system on the trailer.personally iof i were going to tow that much weight i'd want a 2500 or 3500 series truck to pull it.do you have a tranny cooler? that would help also...

    I ordered several new Chevy trucks several years ago and at that time, the 3.73 was required with a factory tow package. Is your truck equipped with the factory tow package? That package would add a transmission cooler. If it is, then I would guess that the 7800 pound rating is for the 5700 engine or the Duramax. 5300 is only 325 Cu.In.(appx) Not a real big engine. I don't think I would pull much more than it is rated.
    Maybe 6600 tops.
