Other than those who are so "out of it" that they do not realize they have hit anything, I think this is one of the worst non-premeditated offenses that anyone can commit. I just don't understand how someone can drive on or away from someone they have injured or killed.

However, some people are callous. I once pulled over to the kerb on a busy narrow road in the rush hour becuase there was a cat lying on the road in front of my vehicle, clearly still alive but badly hurt. I got out and went to tend the cat - cars started veering around my vehicle (which was deliberately blocking the road). The cat was dying - head was smashed and brain was hanging out although it was still alive. Someone actually blasted their horn at me and I had to jump aside to avoid being hit, and they drove over the cat and sped away. I got his number and reported him to the police - he ended up in jail for 30 days, but that was for endangering me, not the cat.

They can do it because they believe, with all their rotten and decayed hearts, that their life is more important than that of the person they have harmed.

Sometimes booze or drugs, or both, are involved.

Sometimes it's just plain old fear.

And in some cases it probably is just an A**hole living up to their title.

Some people think their lives are over if that kind of event is attached to them, especially if it was their fault. Doesn't make it okay of course, it's a cowardly F'ed up thing to do, but that's usually the reasoning
