I'd say a lot of it is just natural talent, but a good portion probably came from the fact that he moved around a lot while he was growing up which may have caused him to rely on his thoughts more (being the new kid all the time). He also completed a rigorous english curriculum at United States Military Academy Preparatory School (West Point Prep School) which I am sure helped.

I agree with anonymous that his childhood has most certainly affected his writing. A stressful childhood, his father left when he was three. His mother, Judith Marie, remarried, putting Maynard into a life of "intolerance and suffering", then she suffered a paralyzing brain aneurysm when he was 11. By the time he joined the Army in 1982, he'd lived in several states before ending up with his father.

Examples of the influences on his writing from his mother, the song "Jimmy" from Tool's Ænima is assumed to be him singing to himself (Jimmy a common nickname to James) regarding his mother and her illness. "Judith" from A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms deals with his emotions surrounding his mother's crippling illness, her faith in God and his lack there of. Tool's album 10,000 Days refers to the approximate number of days his mother suffered between becoming paralyzed and her 2003 death; 27 years or approximately 10,000 days. On that album there is a two-part song, "Wings for Marie", also dedicated to her.

As Anonymous noted, he also completed a rigorous English curriculum in the Army, which must have an affect on his writing skill. Additionally, as he's stated many times, drugs have influenced his work. He stated in interviews that he did Acid in the early 90s. Also, though unconfirmed, song analysts have found clues to Ketamine usage; the song "Third Eye" is a good example.
