I think this question is aimed at making Barc a category expert here ;-) Well, for me, Guatemala is one of the Central American republics like Nicaragua and Panama. What sets it apart, IMHO, is the relative peace that it's enjoying.

A country that has gone through a long period(30 years) of guerilla warfare and created a lot of refugees during that time. A country now battling back from that and still fighting battles to stop drug traffic and poverty. The future looks hopeful if the peace can be maintained since countries like Honduras and Belize are now becoming tourist attractions, Guatamala could have a lot to offer in that realm if they can put it all together.
