From Arabia, to Europe to China there have been many artist depictions of sightings. Many of these as early as the 8th century.
The Crucifixion was painted in 1350 and shows two crafts in flight. The Assumption of the Virgin was painted in 1490 and has many flying saucer shaped devices. The Baptism of Christ was painted in 1710 and it depicts a hovering silvery saucer shaped UFO. The beams of light makes one wonder why the artist of the time thought to paint this object.
Glorification of the Eucharist painted by Bonaventura Salimbeni in 1600 hangs in the church of San Lorenzo in San Pietro, Montalcino, Italy. It too shows a flying device.

They are not flying devices but common religious symbols. See this site for explanations about all the alleged UFO in art paintings (Crucifixion, Baptism, Assumption, Glorification...) http://www.sprezzatura.it/Arte/Arte_UFO_eng.htm

Trystero, maybe the "common relgious symbol" came from a flying craft?
