Question

Help answer this question below.

We have train tracks about 1/2 mile from our home. The sounds of the trains do not bother me, somehow I somewhat like them as they pass occasionally. Can you hear trains from where you live?

Now I can hear them in the distance. Growing up they were just behind the houses across the street. Funny, it took me quite a while to get used to not hearing the trains. I can't get over people moving into a house they know is hear a railroad track, then they bitch about the noise of the train.

Yes. I am only a few blocks away from the train station. I can hear them more during the winter. There are enough trees in my neighborhood that the noise is sort of lost during the spring/summer. Its far enough away that it doesnt't really bother me. We used to live with them literally in our back yard... it was so annoying but its amazing how often you don't notice.

Living just 35 feet from tracks makes it impossible not to hear them. I find it soothing and actually do miss them if they're not running.

Yes, it's freight trains that go by, not passenger trains. When I was young I lived close to a small airport where they would fly these little four seaters. I liked the sounds of the aircraft taking off and landing. Same with the train, it's a comfoting sound.

Yes. I hear the train by our house everynight. It's about 1/2 mile away, also. I love it. It reminds me of when I was little and I would stay the night at my grandma's house. She lived about a block away from a train. It's special to me cause my nana passed away a few years ago and every night when I hear that train I think of her. :)

    Nope. No trains.

There used to be trains on the Big Island to transport the sugar cane. But that shut down ages ago.

The tracks are about 1/2 mile from my home too. I can't here from inside but outside I can of course. I use to live a half block from a track and that was terrible when they blew the horn. I enjoy it now.

Yes, our local railway station is only 10 mins walk from us, so we can hear the trains depending which way the wind is blowing. During the night i can hear the freight trains which run from the docks and BP refinery.

Actually, I can use the sound to forecast weather. If precipitation is in the works, I'll hear a train. The nearest tracks to me are about 12 miles away. The sound will carry if the air is moist. It won't if our surrounding area is dry.

I used to. I am at work right now, directly behind my building is a railroad track, trains go by all the time.

Its an unusal sound. However, i enjoy it, not something most people hear everyday.

It's only 50 feet from my back door. I've lived here over 20 years and don't even hear them.

I miss the sound of a train that passes by in the night. I love the sound of them, for they are calming to me and sad at the same time. I don't know why, but they used to help me sleep, by the sound of them.

    No, I can't.

The only tracks that run through town haven't had any trains on them in at least 10 years.

On very quiet nights, sometimes we can hear a faint sound of trains going by, but it's rare. The trains are many miles away.

My house is but 100 feet from passing train tracks with operating trains. About 90 - 95% of the time, the trains that pass by the house are NJ Transit Arrow III electric trains. However, on weekdays in the early morning and evening hours, a couple of ALP46 electric locomotives with Comet cars pass by (usually Comet IIMs, Comet IVs, and Comet Vs). And, on rare occurrences, there have been diesel locomotives with Comet cars passing by. Some diesels are GP40PH units. Some are F40PH-2CAT units. And, some are PL42AC units. Google them if you wish to see what they look like, for those of you unfamiliar with NJ Transit trains.
