A small computer, specially designed to be connected to stuff to make things happen in the outside world.

For example, airconditioners can have temperature sensors and hot and cold water valve controllers connected to a PLC. The PLC will look at the temperature, compare it to the programmed temperature, and decided whether to open or close the hot and cold water valves to control the temperature of the air. They can be connected to a fan control to turn a fan on or off, or vary its speed.

Industrial robots can be controlled by PLCs.
