That's actually happened. If a juror has a change of heart (or of mind) and notifies the defendant or the defendant's attorney about his/her feelings, such could be used to request a new trial, but that would be up to the defendant and the attorney. The decision to grant the request for a new trial would be made by a judge in the relevant court, if my information is correct. I was never a criminal attorney. My expertise was in a field of civil law, and not criminal law. +5

Yes this can be used for grounds of an appeal . The appeal is submitted to the courts and decided upon by a judge.
