Just the first one, or the whole series? And do you mean all of the individual enemies? Because the only main characters were Sonic & Robotnik in the first one. Then they added Tails and others.

Main characters I remember are Sonic, Tales, Knuckles and Dr Robotics (or something like that) but if you include EVERY animal ect then I am sure your looking at 1000's
