Yes, I can. In fact, that was part of the ploy I used to buy liquor when I was underage.

For sprinkling me with fairy dust.
.
My friend's mom had a big ole Lincoln Mk V, I would drive it to the drive in liquor store, ask for whatever booze we wanted, they'd ask for ID, I'd say "I've got me pahssport" and start rifling through my purse and they'd say never mind and give me the total, I'd pay, they'd hand the stuff out the window. Worked every time.

If I ever thought so, I was wrong. Now, I'm in a house with guy from Leicester, England, a son of a Scottish-born Irishman. We spend a lot of time talking, discussing politics, construction, theater, history, etc., and I'm sure that his worst fears include that my accent might rub off on him and he might start sounding like a Brit redneck or something else too bizarre for his family to recognize.
The last time I tried to fake an accent and really hoped it would work, was one night in a bar in NYC after a rehearsal session with an Irish theater and I was hoping to get a part in a subsequent production. I faked an accent and the person to whom I spoke, a stranger to me, let me know in no uncertain terms that I was full of it. That was the last time. Never again.

An American accent isn't that difficult. The essence of it--at least in the midwestern region--is very simple. The letter "R" is always pronounced exactly the same way. It is never rolled, trilled, doubled, vowelized, dropped, or put where it isn't printed (Pres. Kennedy had an "idear" about "Cuber" that he got in "Genever".) Apart from that, the main thing is that far more of our short "A's" are pronounced like a goat's bleat rather than like the "a" in "father". To hear a goat's bleat, go to youtube.com and search for "goats climbing trees." To my knowledge, only English and (rarely) French, of all the languages in the world, make that sound.

As a matter of fact, I can do a lovely British accent, a decent Irish accent and a spot-on Scottish accent. Now it's time for my tea...I must be off. :-D
