  • I think they can understand simple everyday words first then they understand more and more.If a child keeps hearing 'milk' or 'juice' and the bottle/beaker passed to them, I think they understand.Also perhaps 'Mummy' / 'Daddy' etc.To speak, they need to know how to say the letters and words, which I think is a bit harder.
  • yes. That is how they know to call their mother's "mommy' and father's "daddy" and that a dog is called a dog, etc. We repeat things to them and eventually they understand it and finally they are able to make actual words and can then identify what they have learned.
  • My kids could. They could follow simple instructions long before they could speak.
  • Yes, that is also true when learning a foreign language, comprehension comes before expression. It is logical. You HAVE to know what to say before you can say it.
