As with any publicly-traded company, as many as you can afford to buy of those that are available at any given time. Purchase enough and you can control the company. However, this invariably forces you to buy out large, vested interests, who usually do not put their shares up for sale unless they are willing to sell the company. The President and CEO of Gap Inc. are required to hold at least 150,000 shares in the company (http://www.gapinc.com/public/Investors/inv_govern_exec_stock.shtml), which would run you about $2.7 million dollars today. In reality, this would cost much more, because takeover bids drive stock prices up.

Given the performance of Gap Inc. over the past few years, it is nothing special and there are much better investments out there.
