Never heard of this and i believe its not a requirement and possibly illegal for them to ask you to do this.

Even if its possible, it will take a long time.

Are you sure they are not just giving you the runaround?

If your married name hasn't changed, you're set. they can't require you to go to your married name.

They probably assumed that Nina "smith" is your married name and that your card might still say Nina "jones." But no, your name was nina smith already and you're still smith, you're in the clear.

The IRS requires that the name on your social security card is the same as your legal name. The employer can require the change as a requirement for employment. They could deny you the job if you do not comply.

Go to the SSA office and take your marriage certificate. It is a quick fix. You may even be able to go to SSA online and download the proper form so that you make sure to take the proper documents with you.

They shouldn't be able to not hire you because of that. But you should try to have your paperwork in order on your first day of work when you go to fill out your I-9 documentation.

Because of the great increase in identity theft, the SSA is very, very strict on name changes. in fact, it probably impossible, at this time.

A marriage certificate is a document of a legal name change. Women get married all the time and get the name changed on their SS#s.
