  • troy was discovered by heinrich schliemann in the early 1870s based on his belief in the homeric legends. apparently he did some runs around the area based on facts in the iliad
  • Traditionally, Schliemann is credited with discovering the site of Troy - but in the years since a lot of doubt has been thrown on the veracity of the site AND his claim to be the original discoverer of it. Schliemann's own book about it is riddled with lies and innacuracies and it is hard to figure if he was merely demented in some way or just a total self-aggrandising megalomaniac.... It's a shame, because when I went to Troy in the Eighties I was absolutely thrilled to acheive what for me was an almost life-long ambition....
  • Guys guys only a greek guy knows the story. his wife sofia was greek. I do not take the credits, the credits belong to takis athanassopoulos who wrote about this. First of all Sliman was not an archaologist and he didn't have a phd nor was he a professor. He found the ruins of a city in 1872 but it was not troy. he had a talent in finding treasures, he was a treasure hunter. he found the ruins about 4 centuries earlier than troy. he destroyed troy searching for a treasure. he had a great "nose" as i said before, he smelled treasures, but he was a fraud. now you know, sliman did not find troy.
