Why don't companies pay candidates for the time it takes to have job interviews? Why are interviews still unpaid?

An interview is just that. If you would go up to a reporter, and ask for money they would just look at you funny. Also remember that the company is in a way paying for the interview, they are paying the interviewer. Otherwise the interviewer would be asking you for money for they themselves going out of their way to consider you for a job.
