  • I've had two near misses, both times when I was doing pattern work. One was when another small plane decided to do a straight-in approach, the other was when an Army chopper took off before he had permission and cut across my path on takeoff.
  • I was in a 747 that stalled one time -- the plane was vibrating like the wings would fall off -- people were screaming -- overhead bins were shaking -- the nose tipped down -- and I was sure we were going nose first into the South China Sea. But the rattling stopped and the plane carried on. A few minutes later a flight attendant came by, and I asked what happened... he said "what do you mean, what happened?" -- I said the plane was shaking -- he said -- "Really -- I didn't notice!" I'll bet he didn't notice! But I was impressed with his poker face.
  • Wife and i were flying to Las Vegas, at about 35,000 feet. I was in the seat next to the window. i was taking some photos of the snow-covered mountains. when i looked down beneath our jet plane and saw a Continental Airlines jet plane passing in the opposite direction. We were so close, that i could see some of the half closed windows inside that airplane. I grabbed my wife pushed her head to the window to see. she could not believe it. I could have sworn one of those Continental Airline passengers waved at me. Yes, we won some money in Vegas.
  • Emergency trucks etc waiting on the ground in NC a few years back, Captain making FOURTH attempt to land in near-hurricane conditions, me on board with my then-seven year old daughter and the icy calm realisation that we were more likely to die than survive.... Don't know how we walked away from it but will never forget daughters first words on landing - she looked up at me and smiled and said 'That was kind of creepy...'
  • I was on two planes that caught fire in the air. On one of them, an engine blew. On another, two engines blew. The good news (which I didn't know at the time) is that large commercial jet liners have up to four engines they can run on, and can fly if they lose two. Some planes have even landed on no engine power. They are pretty versatile machines and with all the backup systems on them, they rarely crash.
  • After reading all these comments, I'm never flying again!!!!!!
