  • The most sold T-Shirt for girls will bear the words "Deaf, not dumb"
  • No woman politicans, no women managers and no more listening to crap from your girlfriends, finally the world will be how God wanted it to be.
  • More likely women could be able to do as well as now, even taking some more satisfaction from their collective muteness. Women in developed countries, maybe. In third world countries they would likely reduced to grunting nameless slaves: but even there there could be local groups of girls seeking emancipation by a pidgin sign language. But men could not want to learn it. But in developed countries... imagine the "chattier sex", half the population, unable to speak and hear. After the first generation of disarray and pointless hope, leading to several women learning to lipread badly and wait quietly for getting a voice, a mute fairer sex would be enough leverage to force men to sign and speak when talking to a woman. Think at deaf mommies keeping signing to their sons how inpolite is for a proper fella don't sign to a dame, or... well, what about being rejected by the "college hottie" because "Sorry, I don't bed dorks unable to sign as well as me, too much hassle". Maybe growing deaf many future women would accept a less hypersexualized society: deaf girls would no more worship teen bands, and being unable to sing will stop the creation of a new Britney or a new Paris. So, the only role-model avaiable would maybe be less slutty and more action-driven, and the showbiz as an alternative to talent will cease to be. Music would be sadder, through, as with the loss of a Hilton we would lose several good voices, and as men would still be able to hear, even old recordings would lose any glam and appeal. Women would be perceived as people to sign with, to look at, but able only to point relevant sign with grunting, rasping and cackling... enough to turn the last shreds of feminine voice in something "unpleasant" and sign and body language in a "feminine expression". Maybe acting and pantomiming would be the lead ambition for young stars. The glam-chain would be broken even for average Jane: if fashion claimed that girls have to sew their mouth shut, how many would do it? No one. So if the current fashion seems oriented to show off more and more skin, tomorrow fashion would be more oriented to be confortable and letting broader body movements. No sleeves, no turtlenecks, something not too showy and restrictive, but playful and able to stress more on faces and hands. No sane mother will show a girl a Bellucci as the perfect woman: being mute, the sexiest woman will be the cuter one, a putty-faced comedian showing her brains in captivating communication skills. There would still be social interactions, there would still be cheerleaders, there would still be music and dancing: more likely girls would have to bring their boys into hearsplitting, high-bassed rave music places, and learn to feel the music. Women manager, women politicians... there still would be. It would be more expensive too, as a woman manager would have to acquire lots of deaf items, mail terminals instead of cellphones, a fax and a TTY instead of a phone, and male managers could be able to piss her off by keep phoning and talking, forcing her to employ intepreters. The media would be still women's domain. Plus, they would be sign language oriented, with journalist acting in couple deaf-hearing, TV shows featuring deaf women interacting with hearing men... in fact there would be no need for captions. Everyday life would need some adjustement: a new type of gallantry for example, for both sexes. Being helped in crossing the road would be a commodity, not an unneeded gallantry, but a woman would try to avoid noisy places when with a hearing man. Being a woman would be a rather expensive experience... fire alarms, alarm clocks... everything could be packaged in cheap "single men" packages with sound alarms, and expensive "family pack" with lights, strobe and haptics. Would be mandatory for girls learn how to cry for help, interact with both sexes... the risk would be having some women gifted in interacting with other women, but unwilling to communicate with men. Even if her life depended from it. Maybe the girl born when the hearing ones were still around will be very aggressive, with a gloomy, darker outlook in their lives. Then, why bother giving women a voice synthetizer? No, it's not a chaivinist joke. I think that giving a woman in such a dystopia a vocal synthetizer would lead into a "You could always try to learn ASL, you moron, what I'm supposed to do with that?"
