Apartheid existed in South Africa from 1948-1991. However, it is important to note that while most of the laws on which apartheid was based were repealed between 1990-1991, voting rights were not extended to all races until 1993. The "official" end as printed in most books is 1991 despite the fact that not all races could vote until 1993.
