IF you came from a really meager financial childhood background & are, after years of real effort, are now successful beyond even your own wildest dreams, how do you feel about what you did? Does your family and old friends appreciate what happened, or?

My parents came from very humble backgrounds and my Dad is now very successful. My mother is very happy about that, and he is too. Their parents are happy, seeing as my parents now provide for my grandparents' financial needs. I get really annoyed when people tell me my parents are so rich I should just bum off them, because I see how much work it took for my father to get where he is today, and I respect that immensely, and so I strive to do the same and work for what I have. Then there was one friend of mine that said my parents had "new money" and belonged to a country club that was all "new money" and I was offended by that. I think it shows a lot more strength of character, intelligence, and proactiveness to have raised oneself against all odds, than to just inherit what you've got.

I make pretty good money but have just a high school education. My field (paralegal) doesn't require a degree but that's almost unheard of these days. I'm good at my job, I work hard, but most of all I think I'm really lucky.
