I do not have an answer but would like to share a similarly encountered experience: my set is a little over 4 years old and just developed "convergence" problem where the colors are separated and the lines are not vertical and horizontal when I select "magic focus" in the manual mode. I am able to combine the different colored lines to produce white lines (and a better picture) but the lines are curved and I lose a curved portion of display from top of the screen. Hitachi tells me that I must contact a local independent repair shop. If anyone has fixed a similar problem (e.g., replaced a chip), I would like to hear from them. Thanks.

you have a convergance amp failure, very common problem with crt projection set & not real expensive to fix but not a self-repair issue
