Actually, worldwide, Madonna is ranked as the number one selling female recording artist. Nana Mouskouri, a Greek singer, is actually number two. She isn't well known in the US, but she's been around for a while. (since the 50s) Look her up. She's released 450 albums, sold over 250 million records, and even has a place in Guinness World Records.

For all of those who say Mariah Carey is the top selling female artist in history- you are very wrong. She's in the top 5- but not even in the top 3. Madonna is, in fact #1. Top selling means more then just "Top selling albums in America". There is much more to "top selling female recording artist of all time" then just albums in America.
I enjoy Mariah's music- but find it ironic that most Mariah Carey fans forget that there is more to the world then just America. Madonna has sold more then 300 million albums world wide. Mariah's numbers aren't even close to that..and that's not counting singles. Mariah is great- but Madonna is the queen.

The question itself is wrong, as it presumes that Madonna is THE best-selling female artist of all time.

She is arguably the most well-known, but the best-selling? Nah.

Which of her studio albums has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide? You'd be hard-pressed to find one. Her best-selling, True Blue, sold only an estimated 17 million (although it WAS #1 in 28 countries).

Contrast that with the 28-million selling Falling Into You of Celine Dion and the 24-million selling Music Box of Mariah Carey. And these are just two CDs off of their mega-selling catalogues.

I'd say the best-selling female worldwide is STILL Mariah...due to a combination of her propensity for recording (her latest is now her 11th STUDIO ALBUM, not counting 2 Greatest Hits Compilations, a best-selling Christmas Album, etc.), and the fact that many of her INDIVIDUAL ALBUMS (Music Box, Daydream, Mariah Carey (the debut), #1s, Butterfly, Merry Christmas) have sold more than 15 million albums EACH, worldwide.

And Nana Mouskouri? Please, since when has ANY artist VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN OUTSIDE OF EUROPE been able to sell 450 million albums?

Isn't it ironic that the ones who CLAIM to have sold more are those who are in the MOST DIFFICULT POSITION of proving their alleged sales, when you get right down to it?

I'm also a janet jackson fan but it is argueably true fact that Madonna is the best selling, biggest selling female singles, albums artist as of to date. Some mariah carey fan insist that madonna's true blue album has sold only like 17 million compared to music box's 24 million (if that were true). well honey we are talking about the TOTALITY of all the songs albums sales these divas had achieved. I'm sorry to disappoint you but it is clear that mariah is nowhere near Madonna's sales figures, and with more sales figures, it only means, more fans, more people love her voice, her videos, her style, her artistry, her being Madonna. Check their last album releases Mariah's Imperfect Angel (400 thousand sold worldwide) compared to Madonna's Celebration Greatest Hits (2 million sold).

So no denying Madonna is the Biggest, Best, and Dominant Female Music Icon up to now. Go ask Lady Gaga
