  • Lots of things you did wrong... You only need "popular" not "popularest". That's not even a word. America needs to be capitalized. What America were you talking about? North America? South America? United States of America? What kind of name are you talking about? First? Middle? Last? For the USA: The most common surname is Smith. The most common first names are Jacob and Emily.
  • Yes, the first thing that struck me was "popularest". You only add -est to 1 syllable words, and you do not need anything after "Most". Smith would indeed be the most common surname, as it is in most countries of British background. Even if you take into account other backgrounds, the Germans will have Schmidt, the Dutch Smit, the Poles Kowalski, the French Le Fevre, the Italians Fabbro etc all meaning "smith", a worker with metals. The reason for this is that the village smith was one of the most valued commoner occupations. He made the tools, the cutlery, the agricultural implements, the weapons, so he was used by all levels of society. In times of peace, he was often paid in "kind" ie food so his family was often better fed than most. Consequently, more of his children survived than the ancestores of the average Farmer, Cotter, Fielding etc (who were all farmworkers). In times of war, he might get called up, but he never fought. Instead, he was at the back of the battle, repairing armour and weapons. At the end of the war, more smiths went home than Knights, Shermans (swordsmen) and Camps (warriors). When surnames began to be used in the 1100s, the commoners used their occupations. More "smiths" put their name down than others, and it has continued to be the most popular name to this day. I think even the Chinese have a surname that means "smith".
  • I recently heard a popularity poll for last names in america, and I believe Smith was the top one, so I would guess that John or David Smith would be pretty commonplace.
  • G'day KSU, Thank you for your question. There is no data for thatr although there is for baby names. In 2006, Jacob and Emily were the most popular names. Regards SSA http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
