Its not.

It has some nice buildings but it has a long way to go to be even one of the best never mind the best.

- First I wanted to make a sarcastic comment about what comes first to your mind, toilet paper or culture. Then I realized that it's not your fault, you are a victim of propaganda that keeps going on and on, even though notorious cold have been announced as over.
  
  Funny thing, but Russians are too busy developing their country right now, they can't be blamed in fomentation. They're very open, youth is preoccupied to get two or more higher education, learning languages, traveling and exploring. You will never find a bad American (British, Australian, Chinese) character in their movies, although presence of bad Russians, Russian mafia, Slavic names of bad characters are present in almost each and every movie produced by Hollywood. Show business is the best way to reflect the real situation, as it's demonstrational value is enormous.

  At the very least I probably shoulda asked if he'd actually been there before. Well, perhaps you may confirm the following question-I read in the news a while back that Russia was trying to make it illegal to be a Goth and listen to things like metal...that's gotta be bullshit, right? I hope.

- while back there was a country totally different from current Russia. It was a Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. That country separated itself from the others, made it's own friends. Others were really unwanted. Probably it was a side effect from the World War II, USSR tried to recover this way. Any intrusion, including cultural, was absolutely unwanted. As far as heavy metal is concerned, it was considered as a part of unwanted event, although they could not totally prohibit it. There were several local heavy metal bands that have tried to break every rule and succeeded.
  
  Later on, under different circumstances, USSR had split apart. As a result of it, Russian Federation became a totally separate country. Years of prohibition and ridiculous rulings are gone. Not only Russia has a very active heavy metal activity, it's now one of most favorite audiences for the world's most renouned HM bands.

The Vodka and it's fantastic diversity in its geography and they have had to endure a lot of hardships over the centuries. The people there do deserve respect as hardy individuals that know how to survive even in the toughest times. They were out everythinged by the Nazis yet through grit and determination, they were able to take Berlin.

Of course I won't discuss any bad points here since we are trying to say why it is one of the best ever.

Because Russia is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma... just when you think you know Russia, you don't. Russia's beauty is so vast that it would take a life time to enjoy all of it, and what makes it so great is that our short life spans will not allow us to fully appreciate her infinite glory.

Neither I nor anyone else could get an arm around that "best country ever" claim but it has done quite a job emerging from the dismalness of 70 years under communism.
