I think you should rephrase the question to "what replacement shell programs would NOT outperform explorer" I'm assuming by performance you mean resource usage and not features. Almost all replacement shells are less of a resource hog than explorer. Here are some sites with lists of replacement shells with different purposes: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Microsoft_Windows/Software/Alternate_Shells/ http://shell-shocked.org/shells.php (see "shell links" lower left) There are many other replacement shells available that are either not listed on those sites or offshoots from a shell mentioned on those sites. (blackbox, litestep, and geoshell would be some lightweight shells I personally have tried...)
