My 55 gallon tank has developed a recurring buildup of light brown mucously slime in the filters, I replace/clean the filters weekly but it keeps coming back. It doesn't look like algae. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

if it's just in the filters, and it's freshwater, than it's probably just a build up of your anerobic bacteria, and should not be destroyed. rinse any filter media or parts in water from the tank,(not tap water). you may have to do a water change to get the water to rinse it in, but it's good for the tank. that way your filter is mechanically clean but the good bacteria is still alive. (the chlorine in tap water will kill all this bacteria, hence, no tap water).
